*UHTC Optical Coatings
The greater the light loss the less clear an image will be and it is not only Aperture that plays an important role in ensuring the maximum amount of light, lens coatings are also immensely important.

Meade’s UHTC (Ultra-high transmission) coating makes a significant impact on the amount of light which is retained, increasing light transmission by approx. 15%, with the increase in brightness being up to the equivalent of an additional inch in lens diameter, depending on the size of the telescope.

**AutoStar Controller

The ETX-80 comes with the basic AutoStar Controller (#494) which provides the same object finding ability of the deluxe controller (#497) but is limited to a database of 1,400 instead of 30,000. For the newbie astronomer 1,400 will keep you going for an awfully long time.

AutoStar is a computer guided controller which can find planets, stars, nebulas and more at the push of a button. Pick what you want to see and press the button. If you haven’t a clue about what you want to view just take the guided tour. Autostar comes complete with built in encyclopedia  so you can learn everything there is to know about what you are viewing.

The Meade Telescope ETX-80AT is the baby of the Meade ETX telescopes with a net weight of 6.7lbs and an 80mm aperature, ideal for the casual astronomer.

The Meade ETX-80AT comes with the #494 AutoStar Computer system which automatically locks in to any of 1400 celestial objects in its database and comes with a built in encyclopedia so you can learn everything there is to know about what you are viewing (the Meade ETX-90PE and ETX-125PE come with the #497 AutoStar system which contains 30,000 planets, stars and other celestial objects in its database).

The importance of Aperature

The larger the Aperature the greater the amount of light is gathered and the brighter the image therefore, for the clearest viewing, buy the largest aperture telescope that you can afford. The size of aperature is generally considered more important than magnification as there is little point in magnifying and object that is unclear.

Double the aperature and you can quadruple the amount of light that it gathered so bigger is better. The only downside to larger aperatures is that they become less portable so you need to balance size with portability depending on your needs.
